How To Use Your Dslr As A Webcam On Windows

If you’ve got a DSLR camera, you might be wondering whether or not it can be used as a viable webcam. In short, all you need is the right cable.

In this guide, we’ll be using an open-source application called digiCamControl to make the DSLR input recognizable as a webcam.

Install digiCamControl

First, we need to install digiCamControl on our Windows machine.

  • Visit the digiCamControl website and download the executable for digiCamControl.
  • Run the executable and complete the setup process.
  • Confirm you’re able to run the application after the installation is complete.

Connect your DSLR

The DSLR can be connected to your computer through a variety of ports—ranging from HDMI to USB. In this walkthrough, I’m using a Nikon D5200 connected with a USB-A to AV port cable.

Start the Live View

When your camera is connected, launch digiCamControl. There will be a preview of your feed in the application window. From the left-hand pane, select the Start Live View button.

Your computer will now recognize your DSLR as a webcam input device.

Use your webcam

At this point, you can use the webcam feed however you see fit. It will work with most video conferencing applications like Zoom or Discord. It even works with streaming tools like OBS.

Just launch the software you want to use and set the webcam device to your DSLR camera.
